As a parent, it can be difficult understanding what’s going on with your teen during the adolescent time period. You may think that someone has abducted your child and replaced them with a stranger! Adolescence is difficult not only for the teenager but for the parents as well. One minute you may know exactly what’s going on with your child and then a mood swing occurs and you’re back in the dark. Sometimes it helps to have someone to talk to about the concerns that you may have for your child.
It also may help for your child to talk to someone who is trained in understanding this difficult time period. Teenagers experience emotions and feelings that are somewhat foreign to them. They may become depressed or angry for what seems like no reason. They may feel isolated from their peer group, bullied or like no one understands them. Your teen could pull away from you by staying in their room often, skipping family meals and telling you to leave them alone. This is difficult for any parent to accept, especially if you had a great relationship with your child before. This is also the time period when drug and alcohol use can occur.
This all may sound scary but there is hope! If you feel that this is something you or your child is struggling with, you are not alone. Having an unbiased and non-judgmental professional on your side to help during this time period can be such a welcomed relief. Don’t forget that adolescence is also a time to watch your child grow into the young adult that you see them being. Let’s travel this rocky road together towards a better relationship and the outcome of a strong young adult.
