LiveWell Group wanted to take the opportunity to put a spotlight on therapists in the practice so our readers can get to know each of them a bit more. Please enjoy the spotlight on LiveWell Group co-founder Sean Smith MA, LSW, LICDC-CS
- Why did you choose to become a private practice therapist?
I have worked for over 20 years in the counseling profession. The experiences I have had are invaluable and essential to who I am today as a professional therapist. In the many different roles that I have had, what I have found to be most rewarding is when the people that I am working with have an invested interest in getting better themselves. I am honored when that person allows me to be their partner in the process of change. Becoming a private practice therapist, after all this time, has allowed me to fully engage with clients who are invested in personal growth and challenging themselves to become a better person. The ability to help an individual do that as a private practice therapist is the most rewarding responsibility that I can imagine.
- What is special to you about the therapeutic relationship?
I am constantly amazed when a client that I am working with allows me to become part of their life. I know many people have struggles with past events or knowing how to cope with present stress and struggles. When my clients have the faith and trust in our relationship, and I can use counseling abilities to affect change, it is an incredible experience. I believe the relationship that I have with my clients is one of the most important parts of the therapy process.
- Why do you enjoy treating the concerns in your area of expertise?
Over the course of my career, I have always worked with family systems. The dynamics that develop when having a husband and wife in session, or between a parent and a child, are complex but, when that system starts to progress in communication and understanding, amazing growth can develop. I also have, for many years, focused on treatment for individuals who have developed problems related to substance use. I know that, when someone loses control of their ability to manage their use, it can rip apart that person at the core. Helping them recover and make healthy decisions is a great reward for me.
- How do you keep yourself mentally healthy and connected?
I have an amazing family, with a 20-year marriage and two children that help to keep me balanced. I enjoy being able to spend quality time with my family, and I often fill our spare time with activities related to my children’s interests or socializing with extended family. Additionally, I take time for myself in following other passions, such as listening to live music and visiting with good friends. I take pride in being a positive model to others, and that coupled with my enjoyment of being outdoors has lead to me referring a youth soccer games on the weekends as well.
- What is special to you about LiveWell Group?
Being a co-owner of LiveWell Group, and working with my business partner and colleague, has been an amazing adventure. For me, it is truly the most fulfilling and wonderful place that I have ever provided therapy. I feel the environment encourages growth, development, and hope in a comfortable and caring place. The passion that I put into helping create LiveWell Group, I believe, is experienced by the clients that I serve. It is amazing to I consider it a blessing that, years later, LiveWell Group is a thriving private practice that brings so much good to individuals in need, and that I am an active part of that journey.
